Whether you are self-employed, a sole trader, an LLC, or a C or S-Corp, your freelance accountant has the information you need. They will make sure the forms are filled in correctly and submit them. This is important as incorrect information on a form can delay tapping into the tax benefits.
Accountants can assist with a financial analysis of your business plan and give advice about the best financial software to use. They can also set up accounting procedures that comply with government regulations right from the start.

Dealing with taxes is stressful. The help of an account throughout the year makes tax time easier.

A freelance accountant will analyze your business financials and produce a report. They use this as a comparison against other businesses in your industry. Understanding your performance against industry standard key performance indicators (KPIs) gives you a basis for asking questions. Is your business meeting the standards? Tips for hiring a freelance accountant

Hiring a freelance accountant can be daunting. The process is easier if you know what you need and the hours of work weekly and monthly.
When you hire an accountant, it is not just about professional qualifications. Sure, you want them to handle everything from financial reports to filling out paperwork and paying tax requirements. But you may also want a proactive professional who gives sound financial advice to help the business grow.
While these are important you also want to consider the human factors: communication, integrity, honesty and work ethics.
Here are some tips to help you find the best freelance accountant to work with your business.

Write an effective brief

Write an effective brief to attract the type of freelance accountant that meets your expectations. It should include basic weekly requirements along with the precise services you need. The more details you include, the more likely you are to find the best person for the job.
Criteria your job brief should outline includes:
Scope of work. What is the scope of work? Does it recur weekly or monthly?
Mode of communication. How will you communicate with a freelance accountant? Through the platform’s chat mechanism or will you need occasional face-to-face meetings using apps like Skype or Zoom?
Technical factors. Do you currently have a process for bookkeeping? Do you have a bookkeeper to record financial transactions? Do you have accounting software or do you need to put it in place?
Length of the project. How long do you need a freelance accountant for? Is it a short or long-term project or an as needed basis?
Accounting background. Apart from completing an accounting degree, are there any other industry requirements? Are there unique challenges in your business?
Preferred type of person. What character traits or work experience do you want in your freelance accountant?
Deadlines. Do you have any urgent deadlines? When do you need an accountant to start?

Develop a shortlist

Once you receive proposals, check out the background and experience of those who interest you. Then create a shortlist of candidates to interview. The following are some important points to consider when choosing candidates for a shortlist:
Check their ability. Check each candidate’s freelance profile. Do they have a history of success? Or are they new to the platform? Do any understand your current software system?
Assess their professionalism. How many candidates tailored their submission to address your project criteria? Or were their submissions obviously a standard cut and paste? Assess their communication skills? Do any submissions show insight into your requirements?
Check their experience. Make sure candidates have the required qualifications. They should list these in their profile information. Where did they study their accounting degree? How long ago did they graduate? Are they a member of professional associations in their country? What industries have they worked in?
Check profile reviews. Check a candidate’s reviews from previous clients. Are the majority of reviews good? Do they stand out?

What a freelance accountant will cost

Talk to at least three candidates across a range of experience and hourly rates. This gives you a baseline to judge the candidates on.
Here is a sample of questions to ask potential freelance accountants:
Ask about their experience. Ask each candidate if they have experience in your industry. If not, ask what they know about your type of business and the software you use. Also talk to them about any unique challenges your business faces.
How do they work? Ask what processes they use to complete the work. How they answer this question gives insight into their level of competency.
Ask how they handle specific issues. Ask each candidate questions that relate to challenges or issues within your business that need solutions. This tests their ability to handle pressure.
How comfortable do they make you feel? Even though each candidate may have the skills your business needs, how does each one make you feel? Take some time to get to know them as you need to put a lot of trust into the freelance accountant you choose.
After interviewing each one, you should have a good idea of who to hire. But if you still have reservations, ask more questions or look at other applicants. Even consider setting up trial projects to discover how they work in real-time.
