Bid low and create a portfolio to showcase your skills. Try to be the first to bid on new projects.

Well! That's a good question.
My advice is to participate the contests till you get minimum 1 review. The review counts will attract the employer

For projects:
1.As soon a project raised, be the first to bid on it
2.Your bid amount should be the minimum budget assigned by the employer. Even the amount is too low, you will earn review and star rating. That is more import to begin with
3.Provide the relevant skills and experience list in the proposal while bidding
4.List out few (atleast 5) URL links to share your past relevant experience. If you don't have a server, dropbox can be used. Images preferable than PDF/Word
5.As soon as the employer initiate the chat, provide a warm welcome and proceed the discussion.
6.NOTE: Don't ask for milestone release before the completion of project
Thanks

Im sure there are easier ways but my advice is to look to competitions. Don't spend time chasing high paying work straight away either, a smaller low paying job will still be a positive review on your profile. This was how I got started and it is an effective way to get a foot up.
