Contest Brief

We are looking to have our branding refreshed, re-imagined, and redesigned. We are looking for a new logo, new colours, and new font(s). Our name stays the same: RollerGirl.ca

RollerGirl.ca is a Canadian roller skate shop, we've been in business since 2003. We sell new old school roller skates, not inline skates. Roller skates used to be a retro item, but they are coming back in style amongst women aged 20-45 (our target market). Our customers dance, and skate the skate parks in their roller skates.

Our colours have always been #FF66FF pink (Rhodamine Red C for print), black and white, and our main font has always been ITC Bauhaus. We briefly used #ABFF66 as contrasting colour, which we recently changed to #CFFFE6. Neither of these two greens mean a lot to us, but could be used as starting point for an idea. Our branding has always been based on clean lines, bold contrast, and rounded geometrical shapes, but this can also change.

We’d like to keep the #FF66FF pink, at least as an accent colour.

Our new branding should be fresh, fun and playful. We need something trendy with the new generation of skaters (Women 20 - 45), something a little hipster. For reference, the two hottest brands in roller skating world right now are CIB (formerly Chicks In Bowls) and Moxi Skates. (Look at their followers not their branding.) The Moxi skate videos on YouTube, and Instagram influencer skaters are a great source for what’s hot in the skating world.

Our new branding should be cohesive with our current branding, allowing our existing customer base to recognize us. Some existing elements could be preserved and just polished to create a cohesive new branding. Maybe the girl stays? maybe the star stays? We are open to changing any of these aspects, as long as the new branding is recognizable as us. While our name and current branding is very gender specific, we're looking for something more gender neutral. The new logo should look great when shown big and small. Our current logo is attached.

The new logo should include our name and some graphical element, and be presented in black and white, and in colour, on white and on black. Bonus points for multiple versions for various usages: with name, just graphics, horizontal arrangement, vertical or square arrangement, etc. At least one version of this new logo should look good printed on a t-shirt by itself.

The colour palette should include at least 2 or 3 screen colours (other than black or white) and their print colours equivalent (RGB, and CMYK or Pantone). 1 or 2 colours as the main colours, and one supporting colour for accents.

If the name lettering is custom, there should be an accompanying complementary font for subtexts, otherwise the proposed branding should include at least 1 font for the name, and 1 accompanying complementary font for subtext.

The art should be delivered in a well organized Adobe Illustrator file.

The contest prize pays for all usage rights to the art, including the right to modify. This new branding will be the basis for our new website and some branded clothing.

Contest ends in 2 days and we haven't seen anything to our taste. It is a Guaranteed contest so we have to choose a winner... Here's a few pointers for an easy win:

- It should not look like roller derby
- It should not look like roller blades
- It should not contain any free vector line art of skates or skaters, original art only
- It should not look like ballet dance
- It should not be excessively girly
- It should not be too generic
- It should be visually simple, easy to understand and recognize
- It should be easy to read
- It should not look too childish, but can be fun and quirky
- It should not be just text, we need a strong graphical element that can stand on its own, like the Nike swoosh or Adidas leaf. Probably just a refinement on our existing star and / or girl logo.
- It should look strong in black and white
