It is best if any custom code in your GeoTheme child theme is transposed over to the latest files. You can update any themes that are not active without hurting the site. I would suggest that you first upgrade and then look into any issues as there will be no point in fixing issues then upgrading especially as you are on an old version (3.5.0). use a program called Winmerge that is free and easy to find and download...

I have a WordPress site built on GeoTheme theme. The site is a place listing directory. The theme uses post custom fields to allow the admin and user to add certain filterable criterias to each place that is added in the site. So when a visitor looks at a certain category, he will see the filters (post custom fields) from that category and has the ability of filtering the results. When adding a new post custom field I have the option of assigning it to a certain category, or even multiple categories.
