The Instruction:
Ten (10) pages in length (7,000 – 7,300 words in length). You may write on any subject you wish relating to East Asian religion, (subject to my approval.) This culminating assignment for the course is an opportunity for you to research and write about a topic about which you are truly interested. I will be available to work with you during the process of choosing a topic if you are having difficulty doing so on your own. The final paper must be between 7,000 and 7,300 words in length (counting footnotes, but not counting a final bibliography), which is approximately ten pages given the required formatting. The paper must be typed in Times New Roman font, 10 point font, 1½-spaced, stapled, with 1-inch margins, with page numbers, spellchecked, and carefully edited. Students are required to use at least five sources for the paper, at least two of which must be readings above and beyond those assigned for the course. We will discuss sources, research methods, and construction and composition of the papers in much more depth in class prior to the due date for the paper. As this research paper is the centerpiece of the course, we will devote our attention to the assignment throughout the semester. We will begin the course with an eye to the fact that each student will need to choose a topic about which to research, and we will help each other with our research as we proceed. The composition of the papers will be broken-down into stages, each of which we will discuss in class in much more detail prior to due dates:
1.) The “Proposal.” Paper Topic, Outline, & Preliminary Bibliography. A one-page (2-3 paragraph) research topic description, a one-page outline (both pages 1½ -spaced, 10 point font, Times New Roman font, edited & spellchecked, stapled, 1-inch margins, with page numbers) accompanied by a preliminary bibliography of at least five sources (two of which must be above and beyond the readings assigned in this course syllabus) must be submitted in class on Tuesday, March 29. A proposal should include a proposed thesis, several questions you plan to address in the paper, the rough outline of the argument you plan to compose, and notes on your planned method for approaching the topic. If you are unable to come up with a topic on your own, please come meet with me prior to (preferably long before) Spring Break, and I will work with you to help develop a topic you will enjoy. The proposal will be graded and returned to you with brief comments. Late proposals will be marked down a full letter grade for each day late. The proposal counts for 10% of your final grade. Please note that this is not the type of assignment you can complete the night before it is due. Please begin thinking about possible topics and conduct preliminary research early in the semester.
2.) Final Research Paper. 7,000 – 7,300 words in length (10 point font, 1½ -spaced, New Times Roman font, edited & spellchecked, stapled, 1-inch margins, with page numbers). Electronic submissions will not be accepted; you must hand in a printed hard copy of your paper. Students are required to follow the guidelines in the essay “How to Use Footnotes in an Academic Paper – Writing Guide for Religious Studies,” for footnote citations, etc. The final draft of the paper counts for 20% of your final grade for the course.
