Acupuncture and Pain Management
Acupuncture is an ancient medical procedure, widely used worldwide for its potent health benefits. Over 2000 years back, acupuncture originated in China and started gaining popularity in the United States of America only 35 years ago. The use of acupuncture to relieve certain kinds of pains and aches was published in the New York Times, way back in 1971, by a reporter, James Reston, who was traveling to China with President Nixon. The article clearly stated how acupuncture relived his abdominal pain post emergency surgery. The article had drawn attention and generated interest in the masses, while led to a lot of research to determine the healing properties of this modality.
The Theory of Acupuncture
According to the principles of Chinese acupuncture, there are more than 300 points in the human body connecting to 12 principal pathways and 8 secondary nodes known as meridians. It is believed that these pathways are responsible for conducting Qi (life force or energy) in the body. Good health is maintained, when there is unobstructed Qi flow in the body, which regulates mental, spiritual and physical balance. Furthermore, the two opposing forces – yin and yang – regulate the organs. When the overall balance is maintained, it results in optimal health. Disorders and diseases only occur when there are some obstructions that lead to improper Qi flow in the body.
