This first assignment takes the form of a pre-development assessment of approximately 1,500 words (or equivalent) and will be assessed out of 100% that will contribute 40% to the module marks.
Scenario
A new construction site has been identified with planning consent for the building of a medium rise block of apartments/ offices with some ground floor retail/ leisure use. The site is more particularly marked on the plan attached. The site is ‘Brownfield’ and in a conservation area. The Original buildings on site have received conservation area planning consent to be demolished and sensitively re-developed.
Task
Prepare a report for the developer, in three parts that provides initial advice on the site and its’ surroundings. The report should include:-
(i) How the nature of the ground is ascertained (15%), the nature and methods of demolition (15%) and any pre-construction works needed. (15%) (Total 45%)
(ii) The Nature of the construction form of the adjacent buildings (with evidence) and an assessment of how pre-construction and construction works could impact on the locality and the adjacent buildings (30%).
(iii) Detail the necessary site works to comply with relevant legislation for the protection of third parties to include visitors to the site and passersby. (25%)

Note: In carrying out this task you will lose no marks for asking for further information or seeking advice. You must not approach local agents, building control or planning officers or workers on site. It is particularly important for you to attend the intermediate briefing and tutorials. The work must be submitted as one document with any necessary appendices, with a standard front sheet by 25th January 2011.
Assessment Criteria
Assessment will take into account the context of the module with the individual student’s course. The report will be assessed against the outcomes declared in this assignment. A pass will require all outcomes to be addressed. The mark awarded will be determined using the grading criteria set out in the Course Handbook. Remember, this report requires quality of information, not quantity and the use of a concise writing style, supported by references as appropriate. The ability to analyse and represent information, use a wide range of sources and use accurate terminology is essential for a first class mark.
Outcomes
Through the assignment the students will be able to demonstrate that they are able to:-
1. Understand the process of site preparation, including security, compliance with relevant legislation and protection of third parties.
2. Appreciate the effect of construction work on an adjacent property.
