1. Download the Household Residential Energy Consumption Survey Data and Codebook for 2009. Open both files up in Microsoft Excel (the former is a *.CSV file) – [login to view URL]

2. Find the average number, median number, minimum, maximum, and standard deviation of televisions and computers used in each household. The pertinent variables are TVCOLOR and NUMPC, as the codebook says. 3. Plot histograms for the number of televisions (TVCOLOR), the size of the most-used TV (TVSIZE1), the TV display type (TVTYPE1), TV usage on weekdays (TVONWD1), TV usage on weekends (TVONWE1), and daily computer use (TIMEON1). 4. Plot histograms of whether a cable box, a satellite box, or neither are used in each household (CABLESAT1), whether air conditioning (AIRCOND) is used, and whether the house has internet access (INTERNET). Interpret your results. 5. Repeat 2, 3, and 4 for households living in poverty (POVERTY100=1). Interpret your results by comparing them to the results from the overall population. 6. Repeat 2, 3, and 4 for households not living in poverty (POVERTY100=0). Interpret your results by comparing them to the results from the overall population. 7. Compare your results in 5 and 6 and interpret them. 8. Plot histograms of the presence/absence of microwaves and stereos both for the overall population, for people in poverty, and for people outside poverty. Interpret your results. 9. Answer question 8 for the washer/dryer usage. What percentage of American homes have a washing machine? A dryer? What are these percentages for those in poverty and outside poverty? Use the sample weights in determining these percentages. Interpret your results. 10. Use Excel to generate 90%, 95%, and 99% confidence intervals for the average number of televisions and computers in each household, for households in poverty, and for households outside of poverty. Since the sample size is sufficiently large, you are free to assume that the sample variance is equal to the population variance in determining this confidence interval. Interpret your results.
