Hello, Hello, I have many years of experience with Python application development and I'm also an experienced Linux user. I have been using the Raspberry Pi for quite some time now and I've made various applications with it including home automation, video surveillance, media center add-ons. Among the hardware I've used with it are EnOcean devices, GrovePi sensors, HAT boards (GrovePi, SenseHAT, UnicornHAT, PiFace relay), picamera, magnetic card readers, Modbus devices, servo motors and many others. Do you already have the hardware? How do you intend to interface the Pi with the cashier machine? Does the cashier machine have some serial/other interface?

Similar projects that I have worked on include a custom HTTP server hosted on a raspberry pi that allows the user to select whether to connect to a local access point or act as an access point itself. Also, I have written custom TCP servers that allowed Linux devices to communicate with Windows devices through the internet. Based on my experience, I believe you should go with a Raspberry Pi as it will be faster, easier to use, and cheaper than an Arduino with an Ethernet shield.
