First, this script must be done in a MS SQL 2000 Stored Procedure and/or classic ASP (vbscript). The results will be returned to an ASP page. No PHP, no JavaScript, etc.

I need a script that will figure out the optimal size box to use for a group of products on a specific order. For example, if someone orders 10 different products, you will need to use the dimensions of each product and then find the most appropriate sized box that will fit all 10 products. It will also need to return the most economical box for the set of products. The most appropriate sized and the most economical boxes will not necessarily be the same (but may be). For example, a product may fit best in a 9" x 6" x 4" box but it will also fit in a 12 x 9 x 3 box which is less expensive. I want both the best fit and the best economy box size returned. This calculation should ignore any flat rate box described below.

In addition, it will need to figure out if all of the items can fit into one of at least two "flat rate" sized boxes. The script will need to return a True/False for each flat rate box. This will be in addition to the calculations in the first paragraph.

And, to add just a little extra complexity, some items will be marked "Envelope" meaning that they can be shipped in an envelope. If all of the items in the order can be shipped in an envelope it will need to calculate the stacked height of all the items to make sure the envelope can fit all of the products. It will return either a True or False for envelope. Even if all of the items can be put in an envelope if should still do the calculations in the first two paragraphs.

Please see the attachment for the table layout.

I have also attached the text of a forum thread that discussed this issue.

EDIT: The items can be rotated to fit into a specific box.
