Changing exsiting shopping cart to work with database.

Here are the facts:
I have a simple one page javascript/AJAX shopping cart. No pictures, just items and prices.
PHP takes care of sending the orders.
Items and prices are hard-coded into the page itself.
The task:
Change it so that it pulls this data from mysql database and make it easy for shop owner to make changes.
Simple fix: the cart appears when first item is added to it - but it should be on the screen while it's empty too.
Simple fix: make one existing text input field required before sending.
