Seminar Presentations Seminars are a key method of teaching and learning in this module. As part of this module you will be expected to investigate one or more readings for yourself, and explain the author's perspective and argument to the seminar group as a whole. The aim of seminars, especially in this module, is not only to convey information, but for the group as a whole to discuss the implications and problems of a particular subject together. Seminars are an opportunity to exchange ideas with your peers and it is important, even when you are not delivering the seminar yourself, to read round the topic beforehand. The effectiveness of seminars therefore depends very much upon every student’s thorough preparation for each class and the contributions to discussion that you as students make, as well as those made by tutors. In your seminar presentation, you need to present, explore and defend ideas you have worked out for yourself. It may take time to gain full confidence in doing this. All the staff understand this and will help you to develop skills in presenting your ideas, providing you with advice about the major issues that they expect you to embrace. We think it important that you learn to express yourself orally, as well as in the more formal ways that written essays require. Here are some key points to help you prepare your seminar presentation: * Your presentation should last for about 20 minutes and you should also identify sufficient issues/ questions for another 20 minutes of discussion (i.e. you are responsible for about 40 minutes of the class). * In most seminars you will find it essential to make use of relevant illustrative material (for example, a PowerPoint presentation, film clips and/or by bringing in examples of relevant artefacts) to amplify your points. This will also encourage discussion with other members of your seminar group. You are responsible for ensuring that your presentation works technically and is visible to all the members of the class at the same time. * You should try to talk about your ideas rather than reading from a prepared script. In order to do this you need a careful set of notes, which identify the main points and key facts in a logical sequence. * In your presentation, you should be careful to identify your sources and to reference your reading in ways that are clear to your audience and your assessor (for example, by stating, “As xxx has argued...” and by introducing direct quotations explicitly). * You must provide a handout for other members of the class. This must include a brief summary of your research focus, key points and quotations, a glossary of unfamiliar terms, image references, a bibliography, and at least three questions or issues aimed at stimulating group discussion. Please either ask Bernice to print off enough copies of this for the class in advance or arrive with enough copies ready to go to avoid the late start of the seminar session. * Seminar notes must be submitted on the day of your presentation as part of the assessment process and should therefore be typed, with all summarised information and quotations footnoted, and a full bibliography provided. They should also be submitted via Turnitin before the presentation is due. * Your presentation should involve the rest of the class in conversation about the materials that are being studied in that week.
