I've built a lot of models( with logistic regression, GBM, RF) using python in last 4 years. I am well aware of the bests practices .I think your model might have a problem of over fitting if you are not getting the same performance o test data. If there's an error then it can be due to different distributions for explanatory variables in training data and test data.I can quickly fix your problem whatever it is.
