Checkbox for Word works w/o protecting document small proj

This is a very small and simple project, but I have not been able to figure out how to do it. As far as I know, all checkboxes generally available to Word require protecting the document to work. I need 2 and 3 state checkboxes that I can paste into a word 2007 document without protecting them. You may have this in your code library or, if you can even advise me on how to use an already present function in Word to do this, I will pay you for your time. Round up to 1 hour.
