The HC-05 uses the serial port profile (SPP) - which belongs to the Bluetooth Classic (BT) specification rather than the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) specification. I develop on a Linux PC with a USB bluetooth dongle to communicate with the HC-05. Linux uses the Bluez bluetooth API. If you use a Windows or OS X laptop you would need to use a different library. For this reason, I suggest that - for the initial development - we use an Android mobile app to communicate with the HC-05 module. Do you have an Android phone to test with? If so ... There are several apps available in the Play store which allow the use of pre-defined 'macros' for sending commands to a paired bluetooth device - using the SPP (Serial Port Profile). Once we have verified that the command-set is suitable - and communication between phone and Arduino is working - we could look at communication with a laptop (if still needed). Regarding hardware ... What stepper driver do you use? I would probably use an Arduino Nano - as it is easy to use with a breadboard. If needed ... I can create a private Git repository to facilitate sharing and versioning of software. Due to other work commitments I would only be able to spend a few hours a week on this. I am based in Ireland.
