I’ve inherited a pipe organ here in New Jersey that was modernised years ago with an InterMIDI interface. InterMIDI has since gone out of business and, ever since, the organ gives absolutely no sound when I attempt to drive it over MIDI. I’m not convinced the problem is as simple as a bad cable—I honestly don’t even know the right way to test them—and I’d rather concentrate on the electronics, firmware or software layers that could be muting the instrument. What I need is a technician or engineer who understands legacy MIDI control systems for pipe organs and can: • Diagnose why the current InterMIDI circuitry is failing to route or generate audio • Either repair the existing boards or propose a drop-in replacement that will speak standard MIDI • Configure any required software, firmware updates or mapping so that stops, pistons and expression behave exactly as they used to • Leave me with a short, plain-English document outlining what was done and how to maintain it You’re welcome to suggest modern controllers, microcontrollers, or even a full system refit if that proves the most reliable solution, as long as the console’s historical look is preserved. On-site work is preferred because of the size of the organ, but I’m open to hybrid arrangements if certain modules can be bench-repaired off-site. If you’ve brought silent MIDI-enabled organs back to life before, I’d love to hear how you’d tackle this one.

Hi We are available to take this on and get your pipe organ working perfectly. The main issue with legacy MIDI interfaces like InterMIDI is usually the firmware communication or obsolete serial mapping failing to bridge standard MIDI commands to the organ's stop and key drivers. Are you planning to use a modern microcontroller-based replacement like an Arduino/Teensy MIDI setup or a custom PCB solution, and do you want us to focus on bench-testing the existing boards first? We recently fixed a similar vintage organ system that stopped responding to MIDI commands. We used an oscilloscope and a logic analyzer to trace the MIDI data stream through the optocoupler and microcontroller layers, identified a dead data bus line, and designed a drop-in replacement interface using modern microcontrollers while keeping the historical console wiring intact. Our fix restored full polyphony and stop control without altering the organ's physical look. We are eager to discuss the project further. Reach out to initiate a conversation! Best regards, Quantum Code Solutions

I can help bring the organ’s MIDI system back to life while preserving the console’s original character. With legacy organ controllers like InterMIDI, the right approach is usually to trace the signal path end-to-end: MIDI input, controller logic, stop/piston mapping, and the output stage that drives the relay or tone-generation side. My focus would be on diagnosing whether the failure is in the InterMIDI board, its firmware/configuration, or an external interface issue. If the original boards are repairable, I’d prioritize that for authenticity and lower disruption. If not, I can recommend a modern replacement or microcontroller-based solution that speaks standard MIDI and keeps the historical look intact. I can also document the work in plain English so maintenance is straightforward afterward. For a large instrument like this, an on-site assessment would be the fastest way to identify the fault, with bench repair used where it makes sense. If you’d like, I can start by mapping the existing MIDI chain and isolating the component that’s suppressing output.

Hello, I can help diagnose this systematically from the MIDI input through the InterMIDI controller, firmware/configuration, and finally the organ’s output/driver electronics. A completely silent system is often caused by power, MIDI input circuitry, processor/configuration failure, or the interface between the controller and stop/valve drivers—not necessarily the MIDI cable itself. I would first establish whether valid MIDI data reaches the controller, then trace its response through optocouplers, logic rails, CPU activity, communications, and output stages. If the original InterMIDI hardware cannot be recovered, I can help design or select a modern MIDI-compatible replacement while preserving the existing console controls and appearance. I can also assist with stop/piston/expression mapping and provide clear maintenance documentation. Since I work remotely, a practical approach would be remote diagnosis first, followed by bench repair of removable modules if required. Let's discuss the InterMIDI board model, available schematics, and current symptoms. Best regards, Nichita

Hi, Dear. I am a licensed electrical engineer with deep hands-on experience restoring MIDI control systems for historical pipe organs. ✅ Deep knowledge of legacy MIDI interfacing and troubleshooting ✅ Skilled in PCB layout and electronic diagnostics ✅ Experienced with Arduino and microcontroller firmware development ✅ Strong background in audio signal tracing and restoration ✅ Expertise in mapping and configuring MIDI stops, pistons, and expressions Recently, I revived a 1970s Allen organ with a non-functional MIDI interface by repairing the main PCB, updating the firmware, and mapping each original stop and piston, restoring all console functions while preserving the instrument’s classic appearance. For your InterMIDI-equipped organ, I would begin by systematically diagnosing the existing boards and MIDI path, then either repair the failed components or design a reliable replacement that integrates seamlessly with your existing wiring and controls. All software or firmware updates would be configured so the stops, pistons, and expression pedals behave exactly as intended. Upon completion, you will receive a concise, plain-English document outlining all repairs, configurations, and maintenance steps for future reference. Send me a message to discuss your requirements in detail. Thank you.

I’d be glad to take on this project and give your legacy pipe-organ MIDI system a structured, electronics-first diagnosis. I have experience with embedded electronics, PCB troubleshooting, MIDI communication, firmware, microcontrollers, and audio/control systems, and I’d approach the InterMIDI setup without assuming the cable is the culprit. I would first trace the complete signal path—from MIDI input and InterMIDI circuitry through processing, outputs, and organ control—to identify whether the failure is hardware, firmware, configuration, or MIDI mapping. I can test the existing boards, inspect signals and power rails, verify MIDI messages, and determine whether repair or a modern drop-in controller is the most reliable option. If replacement is required, I can design/configure a standard-MIDI solution while preserving the original console, stops, pistons, and expression behavior. I’ll also provide clear documentation covering the repair, configuration, and future maintenance. Give me one opportunity to handle your project. I assure you I’ll complete it with dedication, accuracy, and professionalism.

I have experience working with electronics, embedded systems, MIDI/control interfaces, and troubleshooting legacy hardware, and I can approach this systematically from the MIDI signal path through the InterMIDI electronics, firmware, and software layers. I’d first diagnose where the MIDI/control signal stops reaching the organ, then determine whether the existing InterMIDI boards can be repaired or whether a modern MIDI-compatible replacement would be more reliable. If a retrofit is needed, I can design it around modern microcontrollers while preserving the original console and ensuring stops, pistons, and expression functions are mapped correctly. I’d also suggest documenting the existing wiring and MIDI behavior before making changes so the historical system can be preserved or replicated accurately. Could you share the InterMIDI model/interface details, any photos of the control boards and console wiring, and whether you currently see MIDI activity when commands are sent?

The main issue here seems to be the InterMIDI circuitry failing to route or generate audio. If that’s not fixed, the organ is just a large piece of wood. I’d start with a thorough diagnostic of the existing boards first, to pinpoint the exact failure. This way, we can either repair the current setup or design a drop-in replacement that works seamlessly with standard MIDI. I've worked on similar legacy MIDI systems, where I not only repaired the electronics but also ensured the functionality of stops and pistons matched their original behavior. I always include a straightforward document explaining the work done and maintenance tips. What’s the timeline for this project? Do you have any existing schematics or documentation for the organ?
