Need help with home assistant parsing serial state data

I have an rs232 device hooked up on usb to a raspberry pi. I setup the sensor in the config as:
sensor:
- platform: serial
serial_port: /dev/ttyUSB0
baudrate: 9600
stopbits: 1
name: RS232Device
When open the history and data gets sent to home assistant I can see it flash by quickly but the state never stays there. I need to capture the data and parse it into different sensors.
