The mistake is treating the chart as a single mutable picture of the mouth. It is a base state plus an ordered history of events applied on top. A tooth's current appearance is derived by replaying its history, existing conditions then completed treatments in date order, never overwritten. That is what lets you show the chart today and reconstruct any past date, which UK record-keeping and negligence defensibility both require. Completing an open treatment appends a completed event that changes the derived state while the history stays intact, exactly your requirement. The second decision is tooth and surface identity. Each tooth is FDI-notated, adult and deciduous, and each surface, mesial, distal, occlusal, buccal, lingual, individually addressable, so a multi-surface restoration is one treatment spanning several surface records, not a vague mark. In SVG each surface is its own hit target, keeping selection precise. That structure also makes FP17 and courses of treatment feasible later: a course groups events, and NHS bands derive from what those events contain, plugging into the same model rather than needing a redesign. One question: is FP17 and NHS band submission in this phase, or does this phase focus on the charting and treatment-status engine first?
