Fix a glitch in our Magento Site

We have a glitch in our site, and I am unable to figure it out. Right now, our site's shopping cart works fine, until you "place order". When this happens the site redirects back to a shopping cart(with the items still in it) instead of going to the success page. The back end accepts and charges the order(we use [login to view URL]), but the customer is confused that their order never went through so we have multiple orders. This is big problem for us. We have a developer that says they can do this, but they may take too long. I want to see if anyone can handle this in the next 24 to 48 hours. i don't believe it is a severe problem. I have a few other issues I would like handled so if follow up work may ensue. That is not as urgent as fixing this first problem though. Thank you for the view.
