Measure traffic on LAN from/to all devices without installing anything on them.

Hi,

I am looking for a tool, preferably open source (or very inexpensive), preferrably running on Windows to measure ALL the traffic on our LAN without having to install anything on any devices other than one computer that will monitor the traffic and collect statistics.

I know i can run all the traffic "through" a Linux box acting as a router or like a managed switch, but I would like to avoid that. I'd like to be able to install a tool on my windows xp laptop, be able to take it with me, connect to any LAN and measure ("sniff") everything what is going on it without having to reroute traffic "through" a linux box. I do not need the ability to look inside of the IP packets or spy on its content. I only need to be able to identify devices that cause unproportionally high load on the network without having to? install something on each device on the network or interrupting the current flow of traffic.

If the above is not possible for windows, I am OK to consider such a tool for Linux, but again, so that i would not have to run all the traffic "through" my test computer, but rather to have it connected to any LAN jack and monitor all the activity on the LAN.

WHERE DID NETOWRKING SECTION DISAPPEAR FROM THIS WEB SITE? I AM NOT SURE IF I AM LISTING MY REQUEST IN THE RIGHT CATEGORY THAT I SAW ON THIS WEB SITE BEFORE. I AM ACTUALLY LOOKING FOR AN EXISTING TOOL I COULD USE AND NEED SOMEONE TO SIMPLY TELL ME WHERE TO DOWNLOAD IT IF IT EXISTS. THEN NO DEVELOPMENT IS NEEDED. I CANNOT BELIEVE SUCH A COMMON TOOL WOULD NOT BE WIDELY AVAILABLE.
