A customer drives up to a pump, and removes one of the fuel nozzles (diesel or petrol) from its holder. This alerts the POS terminals that a customer is waiting. A POS operator must press a button to activate the pump. The customer may then use the pump to put fuel in his vehicle. The pump records the amount of fuel dispensed, and when the nozzle is replaced in the holder deactivates the pump. The customer must then go to the POS operator and pay for his fuel. He may then drive away. The system updates its own records with the amount of fuel dispensed, and if levels in the tanks are getting low it makes an automatic order to the fuel.
