Fix 403 error (access denied) problem on my VPS (Centos/Apache 2.2.15)

I run a couple of websites on a VPS. Images are served from an additional mounted storage, and accessed over a symbolic link (/var/www/pic -> /mnt/bigstorage/pic). Everything was working fine, but after a power outage in the datacenter the images return a 403 (access denied). I tried checking the permissions, and they look ok. My webserver knowledge is not enough to solve this. I need someone to 1) fix the 403 errors 2) tell me what went wrong, so I can learn from it Thanks!
