The proposed design is dividing the square to main five categories; 1) kids playgrounds facilities, 2) Dynamic fountain area, 3) Dynamic Ice field, 4) Public art/street vendors facilities and 5) social gathering and relaxing areas.
1) Kids Play ground facilities are composed of two elements; one is an interactive installation suitable for young and adults composed of swings and light poles, swings produces music when they are used. The swings are also connected to sensors that collect data about how many times the swings were used, for how long and by how many persons. Second is a normal playground composed of stairs and slides and other usual components.
2) Dynamic fountain area, is a rectangular area with a fountain composed of choreographed jets that squirt and splash in patterns, to surprise and delight kids of all ages. This splash fountain could be used only in summertime, while in winter the function of the fountain will change to be a giant game field connected to an App, such as for example the old “Snake” game, the game could be played only for a certain hours at night, the user should install the App and be near the fountain connect to the free Wi-Fi service and start controlling the fountain’s jets and light by moving his smart phone. A lot of user’s data could be collected through the App, which is a sort of crowdsourced data. In addition to that the dynamic field is designed also for a third function that could be used in winter days; a giant chess board drawn on the ground that is enjoyable more for elderly people.
3)Dynamic Ice field; since Netherlands is a cold country well known with locals skating on frozen canals in winter, we were inspired with this idea to propose a small ice rink with a shallow depth of 10 cm, that could be filled with water in winter to freeze and used for skating. In summer the same field will change its function to be a small soccer field; used for playing by teenagers or a recreational multi-functional playground.
4) Public art/ street vendor facilities; is located at the end of the square facing the adjacent residential building. As public art is considered a creative way of engaging youth in the co-creation process, it was proposed in this design as a sort of a solution to the youth problems in the neighborhood, in such a way to empower the feeling of owning the city, so they will feel more responsible about their neighborhood and stop damaging the public amenities. This facility is proposed via a rotating wooden boards that is used for legal graffiti and at the same time a place for street vendors to organize themselves and show their goods.
5) Social gathering is an important activity for all types of people and specially for elderly, but with the problems caused by youth, the city is tending to remove all public furniture from streets and public spaces to minimize their ability to gather. The proposed solution is a “Pop Up furniture”. All seats in the square will pop up from the ground when it is needed. The seats could be controlled by residents with a wall mounted box containing a hydraulic system that is used with bare hands, keys of the controlling box could be maintained with the community center administration.
