In a takeover the mistake I see most often is cleaning the site first and securing access last - which means whoever still has the old credentials can undo everything, or lock you out mid-job. So: control first, cleanup second. 1. Secure the perimeter. Registrar and DNS account under your control with 2FA, hosting and database credentials rotated, unknown admin users removed, and a full backup taken before anything is touched, so there is always a way back. 2. Check what is actually pointing where. DNS records, mail records, and any subdomain or service still resolving to infrastructure you do not control - that is usually where the surprises are. 3. Then cleanup. Remove leftover code, unknown plugins, stray accounts and hardcoded credentials, and confirm nothing is calling out to an external endpoint you did not authorise. 4. Hand you a short document: what was found, what changed, and where each credential now lives. I have done exactly this kind of cleanup: on a client site I removed a diagnostic file left exposed with a hardcoded password and cut a monitoring copy that was silently forwarding form submissions to a third-party address, then locked the deploy config so it could not be re-uploaded. Two questions: do you currently have access to the domain registrar, and is the site WordPress or custom? Those two answers decide whether this is three hours or three days. I can start today.
