data recovery - damaged partition

Need help with recovering data from a laptop's hard drive that has a damaged partition. Laptop won't boot with the drive in place so I've plugged it in via usb to another machine as an external drive. I've tried a few free utilities unsuccessfully. I am currently running TestDisk, which recognises the disk and the boot partition and the data partition.
