PHP - Scrape e-mails and post content to server

We are looking for a reliable and experienced PHP programmer.
We develop IT services voor takeaway restaurants. Restaurants get orders from 2 sources, sent by e-mail. We want to scrape/index those e-mails, and have the contents posted to our server.
We prefer a solution in PHP. Perhaps an imap_open thing, that check the inbox every x minutes and checks for new e-mails? Then with regular expressions you should be able to scrape the info from these e-mails. Alternatively, the Gmail API looks really good. Please let us know if you have any experience with either, and what you would advise us.
The following is very important:
* We need a RELIABLE solution; when a takeaway order doesn't make it to the restaurant it's a disaster! We need a very solid solution, with fallback and/or alerts if something goes wrong
* At first we will test with just 1 user, however we need a solution for several hundred users, each with their own e-mail address
