Task description Use both literary and grammatical tools to interpret the ways in which characterisation is constructed in the passage. At the end of your analysis design ten critical questions you could use to explore the meanings of the text with students. Introduction I suggest you write the introduction last, once you have analysed the text and discovered which elements of both characterisation and grammar are the most relevant to your passage. The introduction should be a preview of what these are, to orient the reader about what is to come. Although 6 elements of characterisation were discussed in the lectures (lectures 4 and 5), you should only select the 3-4 most relevant elements for your selected passage. Similarly, over 6 elements of written grammar were discussed in the lectures, however you should select only the 4-5 most relevant elements for your selected passage (ensure you select some that were discussed in lecture 2 and some that were discussed in lecture 3). Part of the criteria for marking will include a close look at the choices you made about which elements to include. Body The body of the essay should include paragraphs based on each concept about characterisation relevant to selected passage. Each paragraph needs to have a topic sentence. Each paragraph should explain the concept, explain how it is relevant in selected passage, provide evidence from the passage (i.e. a quote from The Secret Garden), explain how it works in more detail by discussing the grammatical analysis, and explain and interpret what the analysis means in terms of the overall characterisation. Additional references are not necessary in every paragraph, but should be included where a specific term is included or where you have elaborated using a secondary source. All secondary sources should be acknowledged. All quotes from the passage from The Secret Garden should be acknowledged as a quote but DO NOT need referencing. Tables may be included (a table showcasing the range of verb groups the character engages in, for example, might be useful) within the body of the text. The literary and grammatical analyses should be integrated as closely as possible, so that the grammar is only discussed in context. You are welcome to include additional grammatical analysis as an appendix if you feel that you the word length is restricting the number of examples you can provide of a certain concept, however this is not essential – we are looking for quality and accuracy of what you include, not quantity. Conclusion End by summarising the key literary and grammatical features that worked in your particular passage to develop characterisation, what was most effective, and what overall impressions these features from the analysis of the passage provided the reader about the character.
