Universal Precautions
Universal precautions are the practices of avoiding contact with the bodily fluids of patients. The practices are used in the medical field and they require the wearing of nonporous garments such as gloves, gowns, face shields and goggles among others. The healthcare workers required to follow universal precautions are the doctors, nurses and other workers exposed to the bodily fluids of patients.
Universal precautions were recommended after the outbreak of AIDS in the 1980s and each patient is treated as though infected in order to minimize the risk of infection. The guidelines of the precautions recommend the wearing of gloves when handling or collecting body fluids contaminated with blood, putting on face shields in situations that can lead to blood splashing on mucus membranes. The precautions also call for the disposal of sharp objects such as needles in containers that are puncture resistant.
Other body fluids that can cause infections include semen, vaginal secretions, amniotic fluid, synovial fluid, cerebrospinal fluid, peritoneal fluid, pleural fluid and pericardial fluid. The bodily fluids that do not need the use of universal precautions include urine, feces, nasal secretions, vomitus, sputum, sweat and saliva.
The infections that can occur due to contact with bodily fluids and blood include Hepatitis A,B and C, HIV, Strep and Strap infections, Syphilis, Measles, Herpes, Chicken Pox, Pneumonia, Gastroenteritis-salmonella and shigella but the highest risk is posed by Hepatitis B, C and HIV. Universal precautions are habits of good hygiene and additional precautions are put in place for patients suspected or known to have certain infectious conditions. Additional precautions are put in place for patients with conditions such as prion diseases, air-borne diseases, diseases with droplet transmission and when working at contaminated surfaces.
I will be happy to work with you. Thank you.
