This is how I see it would work: When someone installs the app we will get his device udid and register him with GCM (Google Cloud Messaging) GCM will send us registration id. We will send this to a database table where we will have a mapping between registration and device id. I dont know how you are tracking referrals but the way I have done it in another project is: When someone wishes to refer the application to another user he generates a referral code and he shares it with the person who he is referring to. The person then downloads the app from playstore and as soon as the app opens it asks for referral code (if the user has it). When the user puts the referral code, we get the user details from the database with that particular referral id and we also get the device id for the user who input the referral code. We create a mapping between referrer and referre. When the desired event happens, we check the referrer's registration id from the database and we send a request to GCM with the registration id. GCM then sends a push notification to referrer's device. Please let me kow if this is something feasible in your app too. I do not have complete idea of how your app works. Once I get it I will be able to give you more ideas.
