COURSE GOALS
This course pursues two interrelated goals: 1) To teach you about Beethoven’s life and music, and 2) to prod you to think critically about Beethoven’s life, your life, music in Beethoven’s time, and music in our time, and the relationships among these topics and any others which we can directly invoke.
If you look at the weighting of component grades, you’ll see that almost half your grade (45%) comprises your Quiz and Exam scores, which test your understanding of Beethoven’s life and music as a foundation for critical thought about it. The other almost-half (45%) derives from your Microtheme Discussion posts, which test your ability to think logically and carefully, and to express your thoughts clearly and concisely.

Microtheme Discussion post deadlines are not provided above, because they depend on the schedule code that I send you by e-mail during the first week of the term. When you learn your schedule code, consult the table on page 5 of this syllabus for your Microtheme Discussion deadlines and write those deadlines on your printed copy of this page.
IMPORTANT: When submitting your discussion posts, VERIFY that Blackboard uploaded your work. That is, do NOT simply click the “Submit” button and assume that Blackboard uploaded your discussion post. Go to the discussion thread, and verify that your post now appears there.
The preceding table lists only the course components that you are required to complete. Optional materials and helpful tips for the above-listed components are available on the Optimization page.
