The NPR classical music companion (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1997) ISBN 978.0.618.61945.0 Graff, Gerald and Birkenstein, Cathy: They say / I say: The moves that matter in academic writing, 2nd ed. (New York: W.W. Norton, 2010) ISBN 978.0.393.93361.1 I also recommend that you purchase a pack of 3”x 5” index cards, for making flash cards, and/or install a suitable flash card application on your mobile device. COURSE GOALS This course pursues two interrelated goals: 1) To teach you about Beethoven’s life and music, and 2) to prod you to think critically about Beethoven’s life, your life, music in Beethoven’s time, and music in our time, and the relationships among these topics and any others which we can directly invoke. If you look at the weighting of component grades, you’ll see that almost half your grade (45%) comprises your Quiz and Exam scores, which test your understanding of Beethoven’s life and music as a foundation for critical thought about it.
