Database Project -- 2

Project Description: I currently have database made with MS Access, it's quite simple and over time it has become slow because it's being used by over 20 persons over a gigabit network, everyday we have to compress the file and yet it works slow at 200-300mb of data, there is no security and no rights and privileges, we are now looking for something that can still work fast over the network and be able to import data easily as we have to import an average of 1000-2000 lines of data into the database daily. Additional Project Description: 01/20/2014 at 20:03 BOT Current application MS Access table with average of 25-30 columns with an average of 3 months of data but wishes we can have more. 3 months of data is an average of 120,000 lines of data. We add an average of 2000 lines of data from excel to this database daily. After daily compressing, this file goes done to about 40mb, during use of the day it expands to over 300mb and it slows down to a crawl. We have an average of 20-25 users using and accessing data in this database daily and frequently. There is currently no security or privilege rights, and data can be mistakenly removed without accountability. Proposed application Some sort of database that can handle large files and still runs fast. • A database that can integrate with MS Server active directory. • A visible audit trail that can track which user made what changes. • Ability to print from this form in any way we would like in terms of which columns we want to be printed. • Ability to create new queries and to add new columns if required • User friendly Interface for adding and editing data, possible browser based forms with required fields with tool tips to assist with user compliance when entering data. • Ability to extract detailed reports • Ability to link with data from external sources e.g excel spreadsheets, other databases etc. • Ability to use import tools, to help with importing large amounts of data or to have such a feature built into database. • Security restriction to certain db features, as well as ability to assign read-only and write access to different data, based on user’s login credentials. Future plans, (database capable of handling this in the future) • Possibility for our customers logging onto our website and being able to view select information within the database, based on the credentials they are currently logged in with e.g If in the proposed database there is a string of data that says customer with ID no. 0001 has an Item ready for pickup, when that customer with ID no. 0001 logs into the website with his/her credentials we would like them to be able to see that the Item is ready for pickup as well as all other information pertaining to the Item. Similarly if customer with ID no.0002 logs into the website they must only see Items that are connect with customer ID no. 0002.
