Project management is \"the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to project activities to meet project requirements.\"*\r\n\r\nA project is \"a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result.\"*\r\nOperations is work done to sustain the business.\r\nA project ends when its objectives have been reached, or the project has been terminated.\r\nProjects can be large or small and take a short or long time to complete.\r\n\r\n** A project: \r\nHas a unique purpose.\r\nIs temporary.\r\nIs developed using progressive elaboration.\r\nRequires resources, often from various areas.\r\nShould have a primary customer or sponsor.\r\nThe project sponsor usually provides the direction and funding for the project.\r\nInvolves uncertainty.\r\n\r\nProject managers work with project sponsors, project teams, and other people involved in projects to meet project goals.\r\nProgram: \"A group of related projects managed in a coordinated way to obtain benefits and control not available from managing them individually.\"* \r\nProgram managers oversee programs and often act as bosses for project managers.\r\n\r\n\r\n*** The Triple Constraint\r\nEvery project is constrained in different ways by its:\r\nScope goals: What work will be done?\r\nTime goals: How long should it take to complete?\r\nCost goals: What should it cost?\r\nIt is the project manager\'s duty to balance these three often-competing goals.\r\n\r\n\r\n*** Nine Project Management Knowledge Areas\r\nKnowledge areas describe the key competencies that project managers must develop.\r\nFour core knowledge areas lead to specific project objectives (scope, time, cost, and quality).\r\nFour facilitating knowledge areas are the means through which the project objectives are achieved (human resources, communication, risk, and procurement management).\r\nOne knowledge area (project integration management) affects and is affected by all of the other knowledge areas.\r\nAll knowledge areas are important!\r\n\r\n\r\n*** Project Management Tools and Techniques\r\nProject management tools and techniques assist project managers and their teams in various aspects of project management.\r\nSpecific tools and techniques include:\r\nProject charters, scope statements, and WBS (scope).\r\nGantt charts, network diagrams, critical path analyses, critical chain scheduling (time).\r\nCost estimates and earned value management (cost).\r\n\r\n\r\nVery good basic information about project management and program management, and explained very good, too in the videos.
