Computer Networks. I have three tasks that needs to be done and this should be a report. The length of the report should be 1600 words.
Task 1
University Network Design CASE STUDY:
A University has sought your advice on the design of its entire networking structure, at this point in
time they require a high level view of what is required (just hardware/ configuration/ topology)–
however if you feel greater explanation/ support is required - references to help explain these are
welcomed. The university has currently 5 buildings plus a main reception building where the main
connection (public IP) and server room is hosted. The requirements are as follows:
- The campusbuildings are all within 100 meters the network should be accessible in each
building
- Each building has 200 computers each requiring at least a 2 Mbits/s connection
- Future proofing of the network – it is safe to assume computers/band width will at the most
double within the next 3 years
- The network should be secure
- The university is against an entirely wireless network
- The network must be reliable should a connection to a building fail
- The university will only have one public (external) IP address
- There should be a Wi Fi hot spot for student use but will only require internet access
- The university will host its own website and email service
- The university network services must be isolated from the public network (external)
- Provide ability for future interconnection between campuses (WAN access)
- Accommodate a local private SAN storage device for business secure data
- The network should be engineered to these requirements so as to keep costs low
Task 2
Military Infantry Radio System:
Whilst under jungle combat simulation in an undisclosed location - the infantry radio engineer has
reported a massive failure of their portable radio communication system. The existing system used a
simple analogue, amplitude modulation scheme for speech only communication. The engineer
reported severe distortion in communications due to the natural occurring noisy environment as
well as the terrain which caused multiple echoes within the speech communication; the engineer Page 3 of 4
has suggested a digital approach should be taken. You are tasked to provide a new modulation
scheme which will remedy this situation outlining it benefits over the existing system and its basic
principles of operation. You should also outline any additional hardware need in brief. The Military
has its own security branch for encryption, so for the moment you can assume transmission of
simple speech audio.
Task 3
The HTTP Protocol:
Give a brief but accurate description of the 5 main (Head, Post, Get, Put, Delete) HTTP Methods.
Support each of your descriptions with annotated screen captures of each Method using the
network protocol analyser Wireshark. (Note for the administrative commands you may need to
setup a simple web server such as apache/ tomcat).
A three way handshake is used to establish an end to end transport connection (between two
computers) using TCP, which is used by many application layer protocols including HTTP. Explain the
concept behind this hand shake, choose and outline a single flow (as there could be many) resulting
from this handshake. Furthermore reinforce your understanding of this concept with annotated
screen shots of the three way handshake using Wireshark showing the packets sent, details of the
flags set of each packet and a graph analysis depicting the flow of packets.
