I have been on anti-depressants for three years now. Before that, I struggled silently throughout my teenage years. There is little that I know more about than the seductive dangers of depression. I would like to write the article that I needed to read, when I was struggling most with my illness. About how it feels to want to be depressed, how difficult it is to get yourself out of the mindset of being dependent upon your sadness for your own self-definition. I would explore how literature and films glorify the depressive mind, and discuss how the darkness sometimes seems to be the only good thing about you. But I would also like to write about how I am beginning to overcome that feeling. The importance of seeing yourself as part of a community, and not just a lone figure who is defined by their emotions. The importance of people who love you despite your disease, not because of some mis-placed romantic notion of it. Sadness can be competitive, and the only way to win is to drop out of the race. I think I would be perfect for this job. I have personal experience, but I also have the academic ability to distance myself from what I am writing. As an Oxford graduate in English Literature, I have excellent written communication skills. I think I could present my thoughts on the subject clearly powerfully, and, because of my personal experience, I would devote plenty of time and emotion to the project.

Hello, The requirements for this blog article seem pretty open-ended, just so long as it meets its purpose of helping someone suffering from depression. I'm not sure whether or not this was intentional, but even the word length (+-1,000 words) is pretty vague. Did you mean to say ~1000 words, or did you have a precise word length in mind, which writers would be free to deviate from in the range of 1000 words? Although I wouldn't necessarily subscribe to writing a "How to..." article for this blog piece, I do feel that it's important for people to be made aware of unconventional (and yes...conventional) forms of help. Personally, I believe that medication should be the last resort and not the first, and until recently felt ambivalent towards mental health professionals overall. This is no longer the case, as I now have a pretty fair understanding of why so many people suffering from depression take matters into their own hands rather than seek out help from healthcare providers. So that you're aware, I'm open to requests for sample work.
