Hello. I have been a writer and editor for two decades and a Holmes reader for thirty years. I am very well acquainted with all the stories, and I periodically read them again; in fact, I recently did so.
Conan Doyle\'s style is very distinctive to the modern reader but characteristic of his time. He loves long, winding sentences with asides, yet he has moments of concisely expressed violence and action. The idioms are nothing like ours (\"I am all impatience to be gone,\" for example), and the word choice gives the average reader the sense of a highly educated and intellectual author, especially when you study how his characters speak.
Thus, your editor must be able to identify any words, phrases or idioms that are not part of Conan Doyle\'s style and era, and to ensure that the sentence structure and tone match those of his stories. I believe that I can do this. I am used to high-level proofreading of technical, medical and legal material, so I understand how to read every word and notice each detail in a manuscript. This is what your work will require so that it passes the test of authenticity. I have also read quite a bit of fiction from the early 20th and late 19th century, including Collins and Buchan, and I am used to this type of writing. I also have a degree in English Literature.
I would be pleased to read a sample of your work first and make some comments on it for free.
Thank you for considering my proposal.
Sincerely,
Mark
