In need of a Excel formula/Visual Display software etc. that will assist in understanding the maximum quantity and orientation of shapes packaged in a box. Example: Box dimensions: 24" x 24" x 48" Shape dimensions: 1-1/2" x 10-1/4" x 34-1/2"; 100 pieces Question: How many of the shapes can we fit into the box. How many boxes will be used total? What is the best orientation to package shape to maximize box capacity? (Visual Diagram if possible) Notes: Packaging orientation can change to maximize box volume (ie 24 rows of 3 pieces; 3 rows of 2 pieces packaged vertically) There will be multiple options in box size. Have the option to use multiple box dimensions with same shape. Visual Diagram of packaging orientation is a benefit, if this packaging information can be communicated otherwise fine as well. The attached excel file is what I am currently working with. All calculations currently done by hand. Packaging instructions are quite confusing to someone who cannot visually see the intended packaging orientation. Additionally have access to AutoCad LT 2021 if more applicable for visual modeling.

First Fit Descending Algorithm is something we can start with using VBA with the following model 1) Objective: Minimize the unfilled volume in the box 2) Constrains: volume of the box, Piece dimensions and piece rotations 3) Iteration: Largest piece gets occupied in the available space (First Fit) with the best rotation (degree of freedom) We can try printing a 2D layout of the optimized fill in a visual studio application.
