Hey there!
I've got a little problem right now with one of the php scripts that I have running on my server. Basically, this php script is a program that allows visitors to view and download files that are contained in selected folders on my server. It's a pretty basic script and I've been using it for a few years now.
My hosting company ([login to view URL]) has recently put a domain throttle on my website because we have too many open connections going on and we're slowing down their shared server.
Right now we have probably in the ball park of 6 GB of primarily mp3 and WMV files that people are using. I'm guessing that the WMVs are the ones that are taking up most of the server connections. Right now we allow people to either download these files or they can just stream them in their browser. This is nothing complicated at all.
The solution that I'm trying to come up with is to move lots of my media files to other servers and to use services like youtube and google videos to show these videos so that it lessens the load on my server. This really isn't all that hard. I've already got the script to play some google videos and I'm thinking that allowing it to stream videos from other servers will just be an easy embed. Some of the problems that I don't know how to solve are how to make it so that someone can just click on an icon and it would force a download of a file that's not on my server. Is that even possible? I know I could solve this with a quick explanation that users would need to do a "right click save as".
In any event, I'd just like some help from a talented php programmer to help me make this script much lighter for the server. I'm confident that I could do this myself, but I know many of you out there could do this all in much less time. This would require some type of chat or talk service like skype or msn or whatever so that I along side with a scriptlance programmer can get this all done ASAP.
I'll also be responsible for moving the big files to another server, so I just need help with the script.
Thanks tons for your time and help.
Best regards,
Wes
