Fully Searchable Flash/PHP Map
OBJECTIVE
Fix problems caused by changing hosting providers and upgrade features that will make this interactive map stand out from competitors. An attachment of my idea of the map is provided.
PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS
Designer will build more functionality into the current interactive Flash map. The new functionality will consist of a help module and a way to browse alphabetically through the streets and businesses listed in the current search engine, and enhanced administrative functionalities.
The administrator will have the ability to create, edit or delete entries in the databases of streets and businesses. These entries will also come with added functionality to enter sponsored listings at points on the map with a complete marketing description of the business (when the mouse hovers over a particular point on the map corresponding to the location of a business address or building. Some buildings may contain several businesses).
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In summary, here are my requirements – this is not an exhaustive compilation.
1) Ease of Zoom - panning to a different area of the map that is not currently loaded - N, S, W,E
The user should be allowed to go to a section of the map North of the current one if the "North" button bar is clicked, etc. If a map section is zoomed as far as allowed and the user clicks North or so on, I believe that user expects the next map to be loaded at the same level of zoom - not to a tiny version of the next map segment. Depending on which island the user is browsing, a small version of that island map stays in view for the user, showing which segment of the island is being viewed - indicated by a red dot. If the user pans or clicks to a different segment of the map, the small red dot on the thumbnail map moves in relation as well, and if the user clicks on that small thumbnail map, he is taken back to the bigger map where he can choose another location/segment.
2) Provide custom maps launched by clicking on links:
For example, Popular Scuba Diving and Snorkeling Sites, Hotels & Resorts, Supermarkets, Gas Stations, Real Estate offices, Major Banks, Activities & Attractions, Watersports Operators, Restaurants, Shops & Shopping Malls/Centers, and Downtown George Town, Grand Cayman, in relation to the cruise ship landing. There are empty rectangles to the left side of the map where the descriptive links to these simple maps can go. I am willing to entertain other layout suggestions to the aforementioned. A detailed street atlas and other maps currently available of all three Cayman Islands will be provided to the programmer/designer to facilitate this design request.
3) Help module - Does not have to be fancy but at least needs to explain how to use the map (for dummies).
4) Enable the links in place to take users to alphabetical browsing tables for streets and separately for businesses
5) Enhanced administrative functionalities - The administrator will have the ability to create, edit or delete entries in the databases of streets and businesses. These entries will also come with added functionality to enter sponsored listings with a complete marketing description of the business. My current brochure states that Platinum Listings will have their business added to the map by using a star, icon of a house or an icon designated by the legend contained in the help module. Ease of use has to be the number one priority otherwise fickle website visitors will not use it. I also want a floating popup to appear that is clickable when the mouse is hovered over the icon. Please refer to the mambo admin section where you hover over the site template and the preview instantly follows your mouse pointer. Basically any type of document could be launched: image, text file, html document - anything. You should be aware that the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism interactive map launches a web brochure in a box to the right side when you click on an icon. This box is also used as the target to house the Legend and instructions/help. View map by clicking on => [login to view URL]
