I am one of the top freelancer transcriptionists. My technique comes from an audio editing system which I have developed. This allows me to use a series of macros to enhance the audio recording so that it makes it much easier to transcribe, with greater clarity, typing up to 85 words per minute. Most transcribers take about 1 hour just to transcribe 15 minutes of a really good recording. So for a 1 hour audio recording, you are looking at about 4 hours average. I can transcribe a really good quality audio recording with a clear speaker, of 1 hour recording, in 2 hours and 30 minutes. I include proofreading as well, and I flag the words which are indiscernible, so that you can easily go through and identify.
