Hello there, I am an Electrical Engineer by profession and have been doing automation and wireless comm projects for quite a while now. You approach is ok but you have to take the distance between the houses under consideration. Best solution would be to do it via node mcu connected to internet. This way you can have as many devices as you want, the only drawback in this idea is unavailability of internet. This idea might require use of a server, but the good side is you will be able to connect app/web to it if you want. I completely understand you idea and can do it asap with 100% accuracy. I'm a microcontroller programming expert, I completely understood what you need. The system I have in mind will implement an already developped cloud platform, MQTT protocol and the device wich will let you know the status of your loved ones can be portable so you can travel and still know how they're doing. Arduino may not be the best choice for this application since it could require some extra wiring and PCB design.
