Hair Rejuvenation through Surgical Procedures
Hair transplantation has been around for quite some time but has changed for the better in the more recent era. It basically consists of taking hair from the sides and back of the head, where hair is thicker and seems to grow better, and placed on the top of the head surgically. As follicles generally grow with 1-4 pieces of hair that is usually the amount put in at a time. Modern hair transplantation basically mimics natural hair growth. The most recent form of hair transplantation is called follicular unit transplantation.
Hair transplantation dates back to the 19th century. More modern forms go back to Japan in the 1930’s. They used follicle grafts to replace eye lashes and eyebrows. The most modern, however, form of transplantation occurred in the 1950’s. A doctor named Orenteich who was a dermatologist took grafts and plugged them into the scalp. He used this in patients with male pattern baldness. It was originally thought that the transplanted hair would not grow, but Dr. Orenteich proved that the hair would graft and grow just as full and normal as the original hair would.
The amount of hair follicles was argued about for many years. The most modern of all of the hair transplantations is follicular unit transplantation. It takes hair follicles, 1-4, from the sides and back of the head and plugged into the balding area because of the natural oils and make- up of the follicles. The smaller the amount of hair they could transplant the more hair they could move. It is easier to move smaller amounts and the scarring isn’t as bad. The cost of the grafts ranges from $3.00-$7.00 per graft. The operation is now preformed as an outpatient procedure with a mild anesthetic to alleviate the pain that will obviously be felt while they operate.
There are side effects to this operation. Sometimes there can be swelling in spots of the head. Bruising is common. There is a medication for the swelling that you can massage on the affected area. There are generally headaches that come along with it, but the doctor will usually give you some extra strength tylonel. The scalp can also bleed, this is normal. It can also itch so patients need to make sure they don’t scratch their heads, as that could pull stitches or pull the hair out. Sometimes there is also a thinning affect on the hair better known as “shock loss.”
As you can see hair transplantation doesn’t come without its risks, but the rewards may out way these risks depending on the severity of your baldness and where you are at in your life. It is definitely not something to do if you’re older and already have been bald for many years unless it has just become necessary because of burning of the scalp from solar rays. The art of hair transplantation has greatly improved over the years and we can only assume it will continue to improve.
