We have a Client Server Program. The client is a C++ application written with QT and runs on Windows. The server is a linux, and the communication is via socket communication. The whole system is a search engine for broadcast information. The client sends search terms, and the server returns results. The current search engine that we use is called amberfish. [login to view URL] The server is indexing and searching against indexes via amberfish on the command line. Need We would like to move to the Lucene search engine. [login to view URL] Phase one would be to change the program to do it’s searches with Lucene instead of Amberfish. Phase 2 would be to add more functionality since Lucene allows more searching possibilities. Lucene would be called via the commandline similar to the way amberfish is being called. Lucene would also have to index in addition to searching instead of Amberfish. Lucene is a java program and everytime it runs, a Java VM has to be invoked. It would work faster as a binary. One possiblity is Plucene a perl rpm with lucene. [login to view URL] But since the index files are not fully compatible with lucene we would opt to go for another possibility that is Lucene being compiled with gcj and a commandline created for it. Again, the first phase of the project is: It all works the same as before except with Lucene installed. Then, we will add features to both the client and the server.
