I've worked with DBs for 14 years (all sorts, Oracle, mysql, cassandra, mongo)... And I'm a performance engineer and have done analysis, written queries better, built indices, and written stored queries. A big DB doesn't have to be slow and debugging isn't any harder. But sometimes you need more primary and foreign keys, indices, and more attention to your queries. So good DB practices are the same whether youare big or slow.

Hello! I have 6+ years of experience in Mysql administration. I resolved the issues with performance caused by server misconfiguration, not optimized queries, HW issues. I have experience of huge queries optimizations (more than 10 tables were involved in some queries). Execution of some queries took more than few hours and after optimization (I modified the queries, so they started to use existed indexes) the execution time reduced to a few seconds. In one of other cases, I modified one of the existed indexes, so the query execution time was significantly reduced (from ~0.1 seconds to a few milliseconds).
